Congratulations to Rodney Joffe, Winner of the 2016 M3AAWG Mary Litynski Award

As an internet user, chances are many aspects of your online security have been influenced by Rodney Joffe. As a life-long cybersecurity advocate, Joffe has played an influential role in protecting the public from spam and botnets while securing networks against major attacks. His efforts across the globe inspired better international cooperation and protection against online abuse. Nationally, Joffe successfully worked to educate the U.S. government on the severity of cybersecurity threats, and served as a core threat designer in government cybersecurity exercises.

Recognizing these achievements, the Messaging Malware Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group (M3AAWG) announced today that Joffe is the 2016 recipient of the prestigious Mary Litynsky Award. Joffe was celebrated at the M3AAWG 34th General Meeting today in Dublin for his lifetime of work and achievement in cybersecurity. The M3AAWG Mary Litynski Award is presented annually to individuals who are dedicated to protecting online users from abuse. (The organization’s J. D. Falk Award, which commemorates an accomplishment or development rather than a lifetime achievement, will be presented in October and is seeking nominations until August 28.)

Joffe’s commitment to improving the online experience began in 1998, during the early years of email marketing. He became one of the first people to take action against unsolicited mail by educating marketers on sending best practices and by developing SafeEPS – a global opt-out service that collected more than 50 million email addresses within its first few days. In 2001, armed with a belief that users should be protected from unwanted messages of any kind, Joffe pursued a class action lawsuit against text-messaging spammers. His resulting victory set a legal precedent that dramatically limited the practice.

Joffe now focuses his efforts on protecting the online public from botnets – malicious networks of code that can steal users’ personal information and hijack their machines. Since 2008, he has led the Conficker Working Group in bringing together 115 countries to mitigate botnet threats and prevent attacks.

As a company committed to protecting online consumers from cyberattacks, Return Path is grateful for the progress Joffe has made in moving our industry forward. For all he has done to protect online users, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Rodney Joffe – a most deserving winner of the Mary Litynski award. Thank you and congratulations, Rodney.
