Seriously, Though. Are You Spam?

We hosted Sergey Syerkin and Kjeld Oostra of MailerQ on State of Email Live to give our audience some last-minute guidance before the holiday email rush, and it didn’t disappoint. In fact, we received more questions and commentary than ever before. What I mean to say is, more directly: you should really watch the whole episode. 

But for those of you short on time, the one thing you should be considering before Black Friday to ensure you don’t find yourself on a blocklist at the actual worst moment possible is the following question. 

ARE YOU SPAM? 

If you’ve cursed my name, I don’t blame you, but the question remains: Are you sending ham (wanted email, yum) or spam? Kjeld and Sergey laid out some criteria to benchmark against, which are the same things mailbox providers (MBPs), internet service providers (ISPs), and spam filters will be using to make their own determination. 

Do you look like spam? 

  • Will machine-learning algorithm flag your content as spam? 
  • Is your email authenticated properly? 
  • Are you sending unprecedentedly large volumes of emails from your domain and/or IP? 

Do you act like spam? 

  • Do you receive lots of spam complaints and unsubscribes? 
  • Are you recognizing and respecting throttling efforts from ISPs? 
  • Is there a segmentation and personalization strategy for each deployment? 

If you feel like I just looked directly into your soul…I did. But I’m not here to judge, I’m here to support you on your deliverability journey, and sometimes, it’s a long way to the top, especially if you want your email to rock ‘n’ roll.
