Six Encouraging Stats from the OTA Audit & Honor Roll

Today, the Online Trust Alliance (OTA) released their annual Online Trust Audit and Honor Roll which assess how well companies across a variety of industries are adhering to best practices in consumer protection, privacy, and security. The study includes nearly 1,000 sites across a variety of industries including retail, banking, social networking, media, the Internet of Things (IoT), and government agencies.

To promote the adoption of these best practices, they compile an “honor roll” of brands leading the way. Return Path is proud to be recognized on this list, once again.

Reading the report, we were encouraged by the fact that more organizations than ever before are leveraging strong authentication protocols like SPF (Sender Policy Framework), DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail), and DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication Reporting and Conformance).

This technology is critical not only for protecting employees, customers and the business at large from email fraud but also for securing the ROI of the email channel. Email authentication results are becoming the definitive standard for informing the delivery and performance of legitimate messages. Here are six stats from OTA’s report that show trusted brands are recognizing the need to secure their email channel against cybercriminals.

  • 97 percent SPF and DKIM adoption across all companies with growth in every sector
  • 52 percent year-over-year increase in the use of DKIM at the top-level domain across all companies
  • 15 percent year-over-year increase in the use of both SPF and DKIM across all companies
  • 34 percent year-over-year increase in the use of both SPF and DKIM of companies within the News 100 sector
  • 82 percent year-over-year increase in DMARC adoption across all companies
  • 64 percent DMARC adoption among consumer sites, the most of any sector analyzed
