Return Path Has Interns! Meet Engineering Intern Jenny Michael

Tuesday marked the halfway point of our summer internship program. It’s hard to believe how quickly summer has passed, but one thing that doesn’t surprise us is how well our interns are intermingling with the company!

They truly are a special group in terms of their character and work ethic, and we want to introduce them to you.

So let’s meet Jenny Michael! She’s a Software Engineering Intern on the Email Fraud Protection Core Team in Broomfield, CO.

Tell us a little about yourself!
I grew up in Parker, Colorado, which is a bit southeast of Denver, and I’m currently pursuing a Computer Science degree with a focus on Software Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder. I love to bake fun things I see online, and I like brunch more than the average person.

What made you want to intern at Return Path?
I attended a Mock Interview Panel at CU Boulder that Return Path was attending. I had never heard of Return Path before, but after mock-interviewing with Margaret Driscoll from the Broomfield office, I was hooked. She told me all about Return Path and gave me examples of the types of products they offer. I knew I wanted to be a part of what Return Path does and applied online about an hour later.

What are your main projects at Return Path?
I work on the EFP Core team, which is more on the backend side of the EFP business. My first project was to create a filter for whitelisted URLs. The idea is that we have a ton of spam/phishing/spoofing emails in our databases that each contain attributes like a header, URLs, content, etc. We also have a list of URLs that have been whitelisted, meaning that they are cleared by our clients as valid URLs.

When we scan through all our messages and pull these URLs, we don’t care to look at the URLs that are valid – we only care about those that are malicious. The code I built into the existing system filtered out all the whitelisted URLs so we only got the data we cared about. I’ve also been doing work on the SPF Lookup tool that involves parsing different styles of IP ranges.

What do you enjoy most about being an intern at Return Path?
I love my team! And I also love how much I’ve been learning. In six weeks at Return Path, I have already begun to learn two new programming languages and more about email, backend development, software engineering, etc., which is more than I could have ever imagined. My mentors on my team have been fantastic at throwing these new tasks at me, giving me a bit of guidance, and then letting me come up with the solutions on my own. The whole free lunch thing is pretty fantastic as well.

When you’re not working, what can you be found doing in Colorado?
I spend a lot of time with my family and friends! We love barbecues, shopping, seeing movies, painting, hiking, and trying out new restaurants in the Denver/Boulder area. My younger brother started doing triathlons a few years back and following him around Colorado to cheer him on has been a blast. I also go up to the mountains (usually Breckenridge or Winter Park) whenever I can.

What is your spirit animal?
My spirit animal is a golden retriever because of their generally happy disposition and eagerness to both meet new people and run at life expecting the best.
