What’s your role here at Return Path?
As a product manager, it’s my job to understand the how email marketing and CRM teams do their jobs, and then identify common and significant challenges they face. I then work with engineers, data scientists, analysts, designers, sales, and service to build solutions for those problems.
What initially brought you here?
I was working at a company that was not very transparent, which I found challenging. Following that experience, it became my mission to find a place that valued transparency and I was lucky enough to find Return Path.
Tell me something I don’t know about email marketing.
Wrangling all of the data and technologies together to make email marketing work can be really, really challenging and probably consumes the majority of an email team’s time.
What energizes you about your role at Return Path?
Building products, particularly early stage products, is my vocation. Working with engineers, data scientists, designers, and many others is a privilege and allows me to satisfy my intellectual curiosity. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing something you and the team have built from scratch solve a really big problem for customers.
What problem is the most fun to solve?
I really enjoy bringing folks together with very different experience and backgrounds to tackle complex challenges.
What about you might come as a surprise to those that work closely with you?
I worked for a non-profit in East Africa for two years right after graduating college. My job took me to remote coffee growing regions of Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia and was an incredibly fun and important experience for me.
What’s the most memorable email campaign you’ve seen lately?
I recently received an email from a clothing retailer with what seemed like a completely random dollar value price for a deal. The randomness of the number leads me to believe that they’re using a lot of personalization, but it got me wondering how they landed on that random number. However they chose it, it definitely got me to open the email.
What emails can we find in your personal inbox?
You’ll find lots of blog digests about machine learning, blockchain, and cryptocurrency—something that I’ve become completely engrossed in over the last year or so. Some favorites include the Exponential View newsletter by Azeem Azhar, the newsletter digest by Consensys, and Fred Wilson’s blog.
What’s your favorite thing about working at Return Path?
Working with a great team to use cutting edge technology to solve help customers solve really tough problems—you can’t beat it.
