Name: Patrick Lawlor
Return Path position: Product Analytics intern on the EFP team in the Austin, TX office.
Education: Bachelor of Science in Economics from St. Lawrence University (Canton, NY). Graduated: Spring 2015
Walk me through your typical day at Return Path.
I get into the Austin office around 9:00 am. I never have any meetings before 10:00 am, so I usually check my emails and get some of the pettier tasks out of the way. Once that is over, I work out a small agenda for the rest of my day.
The main project I’m currently working on is attempting to figure out why major mailbox providers sometimes override the DMARC policies of incoming messages. I am looking to find patterns within the data to help understand when an override is more likely to happen. Ultimately, I am going to try to build a model that explains why a message, or message campaign, has been overridden by a certain mailbox provider. This will give Return Path needed insight to the behaviors of mailbox providers as well as help our customers understand and possibly prevent ongoing authentication problems.
What is your favorite aspect about being an intern at Return Path?
The people first attitude. I feel I am treated as a real human being and people actually care about how I am doing, even those who are much higher up in the company than I am. For example, my apartment flooded in the spring, so the next time it rained hard, my manager, as well as other people I had scheduled meetings with, all knew I had this problem so they sent me home for the day to make sure my things were okay. In addition to this kind support, people around the office gave me good advice as to how to prevent flooding.
What type of advice would you give to future interns looking to work at Return Path?
Do not be afraid to talk to people if you have questions. Try getting to know as many people as you can; it will help you out in the long run when you need help. It will also improve your overall experience immensely. Even if you are not a social person, force yourself to talk to your co-workers at lunch, participate in activities with your co-workers, and get to know people from all kinds of departments.
What is one item on your bucket list?
I want to play the arcade games in the Colorado office, looks awesome!
